Autograph Letter Signed, to Dr. Royle, asking for information on “Amsuli Kotel which the Indian Ladies use for lip salve”. 1 page 7 x 4 inches, with the address leaf (a few traces of former mounting). Verulam Buildings, 4 March 1837. Charles Stokes (1784-1853), amateur scientist, collector, stockbroker, had a large and distinguished acquaintance across the arts and sciences. His clients included Charles Darwin, John Ruskin and J.M.W.Turner. He had become acquainted with Darwin before the latter embarked in 1831 on the voyage in HMS Beagle which made his name, and had asked him to collect information on Fungia, a genus of coral.
