Description

Autograph Letter Signed, keen to interest his correspondent “in a publication on part of the pavement at Siena Cathedral” by a friend of his, discussing “the diggings” at Otricoli, and fearing that speculative building in Rome will lead to “a terrific smash ere long”. 4 pp. 7 x 4½ inches, in good condition. Rome, 10 March 1887. Richard Popplewell Pullan (1825-1888), architect and archaeologist, surveyed the mausoleum at Halicarnassus which was excavated in 1856. In 1862 he began excavations on the Temple of Bacchus at Teos. Similar commissions and travels in Asia Minor followed, and Pullan’s work was published in a number of books on Byzantine and classical archaeology.
