Description

Autograph Letter Signed, evidently about a stature of Queen Victoria, explaining that “The statue is still in the mould for the Sydney one”, lamenting the difficulty in finding good moulders. 4 pp. 6 x 4 inches, in sound condition but with some unsightly staining. The Avenue, 76 Fulham Road, 16 July 1887. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-90), British sculptor who designed the Queen’s effigy on the 1887 coinage. “The statue is still in the mould for the Sydney one. Next week the mould for the second will be begun. There is more work in it than I thought & I fear it will be rather late in the autumn before we can get it in situ.” Boehm’s well known statue of Queen Victoria (1888) was commissioned for the Sydney Centennial Exhibition.
