A significant Autograph Letter Signed ‘C.G.Gordon’, to Mr. Scott [later Judge Sir John Scott], reporting Gordon’s appointment by the Khedive of Egypt to be Governor of the Soudan, “so there is the end of Slavery, if God wills, for the whole secret of the matter is, in that Govt. & if the man who holds it, the Govt., is against it, it must cease”. 1 page 8 x 5 inches, fine, with an integral blank leaf. Cairo, 15 February 1877. A superb display piece for any Anti-Slavery collection. General Charles George Gordon (1833-1885), the Victorian hero who died at Khartoum. “The K has given me over the Soudan, in addition to the Province of Equator …” Gordon’s correspondent is Sir John Scott (1841-1904) who had practised law in Alexandria (1872-74); later in his career Scott reformed Egypt’s legal system.
