Description
Autograph Letter Signed ‘Francis Place’, asking for a copy of the prospectus lately printed by the Directors of the Great Western Railway, describing his own extensive experience of the railways coming into London, his enthusiasm for the development of the railways, the result of a recent public meeting, and praising Mr. Brunel. 2 pp. 10 x 7 inches, with an integral blank, in very good condition. 13 January 1839. Francis Place (1771-1854), radical reformer, author of The Principle of Population. He had a successful tailoring business at Charing Cross. “I should have written a note of congratulation to Mr. Brunel for the manner in which he treated the whole subject. His triumph is matter of consolation and exultation to me because but for his resolution and enterprise there would have been no improvement in rail ways either now or hereafter, of any consequence. The good he has done and that which will result from it cannot be calculated, and I wish him every possible health and happiness.”
