Letter Signed, to the Treasurer of the London Missionary Society, telling them that he has today drawn 1000 pounds in two bills. Marked duplicate. 1 page 10 x 8 inches, remains of guard, in good condition. Annotated as received on 15 November 1842. Cape Town, 29 August 1842. The autograph of John Philip (1775-1851), Scottish missionary in South Africa. He tried to support independent native states against colonial aggression, and attempted to prevent the Kaffir War. He was the most prominent politician in Cape Colony for thirty years.
