Letter Signed ‘Lansdowne’, to William Tooke, declining the office of President “of the Society for superceding the use of climbing-boys” to clean chimneys, due to his patronage of so many other Societies. 2 pp. 8½ x 7 inches, in good condition, integral blank leaf (traces of mounting). Berkeley Square, 21 May 1827. Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne (1780 –1863), statesman. In a ministerial career spanning nearly half a century he notably served as Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer and was three times Lord President of the Council.
