An original carte de visite photograph of an engraved portrait of William James, annotated on verso: “William James, the Projector of the Manchester & Liverpool Railway”. Together with a Victorian copy “Of the Original Agreement in respect to Locomotive Engines, between William Losh, George Stephenson, William James and William Henry James (September 1, 1821)” and a series of printed letters in The Mining Journal (1857-58) by William Henry James claiming his father to be “the Originator of the Modern Railway System”. Some wear, light soiling, marginal tears. Photograph undated. Preserved among the family papers. William James (1771-1837), railway projector. James’s connection with the establishment of railways constitutes his chief claim to remembrance.
