Autograph Letter Signed ‘Arthur Dacre’, to Mrs.Berlyn, describing recent financial losses in the theatre, stating that “it seems we cant get a living here”. 4 pp. 7 x 4½ inches, in good condition. The Tower House, Tite Street [London], 29 May 1890. “…we are going (much against the grain) to offer our services in drawing rooms. I then do a short watering-places tour before leaving England – I hope for good.” Arthur James, known as Arthur Dacre (1840-1895), actor, formerly a physician. Amy and Arthur James, better known as Amy Roselle and Arthur Dacre, arrived in Australia in 1895. They had been suffering bad luck in England and thought that they could recoup their losses in the colony. But on 17 November 1895 they ended their lives in a real-life drama – the tragedy of a murder-suicide at their lodgings at 129 Macquarie Street, Sydney.
