Autograph Letter Signed ‘Jno. Natal’, to Mrs. Hawthorne, discussing the employment of Mr Delamare, a schoolmaster, who has “taken to drinking”. 4 pp. 7 x 4 inches, minor blemishes, with a carte-de-visite of Dr. Colenso tipped on to the final page. Bishopstowe, 2 December 1881. John William Colenso (1814-83), Bishop of Natal. Charged with heresy in 1863 by his superior, Bishop Gray of Cape Town, Colenso was finally deprived of his see in 1869.
