Frederic Shields (1833-1911)‚ painter and decorative artist‚ intimate of D.G.Rossetti. “I liked your indignation at the Royal Academy’s neglect of Mr Mitchell’s splendid ‘Rossetti’. It was too evident‚ on the private view day‚ that they had thought to darken his light when dead‚ but it burnt a hole in thier bushel‚ & they had to give way‚ and rearrange the envious cramping of pictures such as their walls are strangely unaccustomed to sustain. One of the chiefest blots in the collection was a miserable replica of the ‘Venus Verticordia’ and I deeply regret that Mr Mitchell did not yield to my entreaty to blast their stupidity by exhibiting the glorious original in his possession at the Burlington Club. Never did a great man’s work & memory meet so cruel a fate at the hands of friends & foes immediately after his departure as my dearest friend Rossetti’s. Conspicuous among these sinners‚ stands Mr Ruskin - in his recent vapourings at Oxford‚ speaking in one breath of Rossetti as his dear friend‚ and a great leader of modern English art‚ & then muddling up the facts of his life with grossly exaggerated statements‚ & bespattering his early works with criticisms which are merely effective lying - without a single reference to his later pursuit of beauty & triumphant claims to its attainment. Your own fire has heated me into this bubbling but I have been simmering on this subject some time.”
