Autograph Letter Signed, about a forthcoming visit. A good one page example, 7 x 4 inches. Admiralty, 26 November [1817]. Admiral Sir Joseph Sydney Yorke (1768-1831) joined the Navy in the 1780’s. As a junior officer he saw action at the Battle of the Saintes in April 1782 during the American Revolutionary War. He commanded HMS Stag at the defeat of the Dutch fleet in August 1795 during the French Revolutionary Wars. He rose to be appointed a Lord of the Admiralty, and as a rear-admiral took reinforcements to Lisbon in January 1813. He devoted much of his retirement to the support of naval charities.
