Autograph Letter Signed, to Dr. Raffles, hoping that Wolff’s lectures will prove that Russia was not the aggressor in the Holy Land. 1 page 7 x 4 inches, with the original advertisement for Wolff’s lectures “Upon The Churches of The East”, which was pinned to the letter. In good condition. 21 Netherfield Road South Liverpool, 22 October 1855. Joseph Wolff (1795-1862), Anglicised Jew who became a missionary to the Jews in the East, and the author of a Narrative of his Mission to Bokhara. “I hope that you will encourage these Lectures. I hope to prove that Russia is not the Aggressor, but the Aggression was made by the Establishment of the Anglican Bishops & by the Usurpation of Napoleon over the Holy Sepulchre.” His correspondent is Thomas Raffles (1788-1863), independent Minister of the Newington Chapel, Liverpool (1811-1862).
