Original Memorandum, signed ‘W.J.Williams’ as Captain of HMS Amphion, to Captain Hall of HMS Dragon, directing that “the Marines of the Dragon are immediately landed and placed under the orders of Lieut. Foote of HMS Amphion”. 6 x 8 inches, in good condition. HMS Amphion, 20 April 1848. Captain (later Admiral) Woodford John Williams, author of A Steam Manual for the British Navy, served in Syria (1840), and was ordered to take supplies for the relief of the Irish Famine in 1848. HMS Amphion was a 36-gun wooden hulled screw frigate of the Royal Navy. She was initially ordered as a sail powered ship, but later reordered as a prototype screw frigate conversion.
