Autograph Letter in the third person, to Cadell and Davis, the publishers, asking for two copies of a volume of the Asiatic Transactions from the Company’s warehouse, one for the Company Library, and one for himself. 1 page 8 x 6 inches, one old repair, in good condition. “Friday 15th. 08.” Uncommon. Sir Charles Wilkins, FRS (1749 – 1836), typographer and Orientalist, notable as the first translator of Bhagavad Gita into English, and as the creator, alongside Panchanan Karmakar, of the first Bengali typeface. In 1800, he was invited to take up the post of the first director of the India House Library, which became over time the world famous ‘India Office Library’ (now British Library — Oriental Collections).
