WILDE, Oscar. 17141

An original Visiting Card used by Oscar Wilde (”Mr. Sebastian Melmoth”) after his release from prison in 1897. Card, 2 x 3½ inches, dusty, otherwise in good condition. [1897] Two versions of this card are known, one with a Dieppe address, and one without an address. Writing from Berneval-sur-Mer on 28 May 1897 to Henrietta Stannard, Wilde stated “To escape the foolish tongue and the prying eye I have for the moment taken the name of Sebastian Melmoth, a curious name …” One of the cards bearing the address was sold at Sothebys London in July 2016 for £3500 plus premium.
