Description

Two Autograph Letters Signed, to J.Davison in London and Reading, thanking him for the books he has sent, explaining that no vessel had arrived from the Indies, etc. In French. 3 pp. 9 x 7 inches, with address leaves. Brussels, 1778. Joseph Lyons Walrond (1752-1815) of Antigua has the distinction of being singled out and denounced as a “slave owner” by his former college, St. John’s, Oxford, in their so-called “Colonial Past blog”, in which the narrow minds of modern Oxford find fashionable expression:: “…Walrond went on to live in Antigua as a slave-owner, and married Caroline Codrington, whose family also owned slaves and estates in Antigua … Joseph and Caroline’s son, Bethell Walrond, was therefore in the position, at the abolition of slavery, to claim compensation for enslaved people and estates inherited from both the Walrond and Codrington families.” As far as we know, Joseph Lyons Walrond did not make the mistake of leaving money to his old College.
