A good Autograph Letter Signed [to Pierre Hipployte Boutigny, the pharmacist], while working as a pharmacist in Rotterdam, renewing their correspondence, discussing experiments, mentioning Dumas and Liebig, travel plans, etc. In French. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in fine condition, tipped on to part of an old album page. Rotterdam, 4 May 1852. Johan Eliza de Vrij (1813-1898), pharmacologist and quinologist, worked first as a pharmacist in Rotterdam from 1832, and then as a chemist in plant experiments in Java, relating particularly to the extraction of medical compounds from plants, the preparation of quinine compounds, etc. Some of his reports are in the India Office Library.
