John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892 – 1973), writer, poet, philologist, and university professor who is best known as the author of the classics The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. In 1925 The Clarendon Press had published Tolkien’s own edition of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. Tolkien writes: “I find it most interesting, though I haven’t yet had time to study it with care, as I have just returned to Oxford after some absence and am in the middle of arranging a removal.”
