Autograph Letter Signed, to George Taylor, written by Thorp on a printed Prospectus for the University of Durham, hoping that his correspondent will approve of the University project to secure “a cheap and solid education to our northern youth”. 1 page letter, 2 pages Prospectus, address panel (Durham postmark), 10 x 8 inches, in good condition, some paper adhering where formerly mounted. Durham, 15 December 1831. The Ven. Charles Thorp (1783-1862), anti-slavery campaigner, first Warden of the University of Durham. The prospectus sets out the subjects which may be studied and the four classes of students who may attend lectures. The University was opened in October 1832.
