Autograph Manuscript autobiography (4 folio pages), with 11 Autograph Letters Signed (1 illustrated with “Sandy McClaus”) and 2 Autograph Correspondence Cards Signed, all addressed to J.Grant Reid, discussing his artistic career, Reid’s book (At The Sign Of The Brush And Pen, 1898), current work, colour printing, his work for Judy, Ally Sloper, Harry Furniss, and much else. Letters 35 pp. 8vo, all in good clean condition. London and Huddersfield, 1897-98, where dated. William Fletcher Thomas (1862-1922), Punch artist, who contributed to Judy and took over as the cover artist of Ally Sloper’s Half Holiday in 1888. His unpublished reminiscences are of value (“you will doubtless be able to winnow the grain from the chaff, and make a readable article of it.”) “Character of Sloper very real, little boys used to congregate around door of ‘Sloperics’ about six o’clock, waiting for the Old Un to come out. In early days was once supposed to be very ill, bulletins posted every day outside office, scanned eagerly by passers by, speculations as to whether he would get over it.”
