Autograph Letter Signed, as Commander of the British Forces in Egypt, addressed “Monseigneur”, extending an invitation. In French. 1 page 8 x 6½ inches, folds, in good condition. Head Quarter House [Egypt], 7 February 1899. Uncommon. Major General Hon. Sir Reginald Arthur James Talbot (1841 – 1929) had both a distinguished political and military career. He served in the Zulu War (1879), with the Life Guards; in the Egyptian Campaign (1882); and in the Nile Expedition (1884 – 5), where he was mentioned in dispatches. Later he was Military Attache in Paris (1889 – 95); in command of the Cavalry Brigade at Aldershot (1896 – 99); and commanded the army of occupation in Egypt (1899 – 1903). His final tour of duty was as Governor of Victoria, Australia (1904 – 08).
