Colonel William Henry Sykes (1790-1872), naturalist and soldier, Chairman of the East India Company in 1856, served in Bhartpur under Lord Lake (1805) and served in the Deccan in 1817-1820. He was Statistical Reporter for the Bombay Government from 1824 to 1831, author of numerous scientific and literary works, including The Taeping Rebellion in China (1863).
