STARKE, Mariana. 17073

Autograph Note Signed ‘M.Starke’, addressed “My dear Madam”, informing her that “The Piscina is near Sorrento on the left hand before you enter the Gate”, and suggesting arrangement for their meeting. 1 page 4½ x 4 inches, in good condition, lightly mounted at corners on part of an old album page. [Italy] undated. Uncommon. Mariana Starke (1762-1838), writer of guide books, Letters from Italy (1800), Travels in Europe for the use of Travellers.., and similar. These guidebooks proved useful forerunners of the labours of Murray and Baedeker. Mariana Starke lived in Italy for an extended period, between 1792 and 1798, in order to attend a sick relation, and this experience formed the basis for her later writing. Her travel guides went into several editions and were variously translated and pirated. John Murray, her publisher, launched the well-known travel series partially on the strength of her success. She revisited Italy in 1817–19, and again in 1838.
