George Clarkson Stanfield (1828-1878), painter, the second son from the second marriage of his painter father Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793–1867). He is best known for his topographical views painted during his visits to the Rhine Valley, the Moselle, Switzerland, and the Italian lakes. The Hampstead Conversazione Society met monthly during the winter at the assembly rooms from 1846 until 1872. In addition to lectures, it provided art exhibitions which for limited periods were open free to all residents.
