SMITH, William Henry. 13542

Autograph Letter Signed, to Alexander Forbes, thanking him for the letter and pamphlet, assuring him that the Government will not ignore the points he has raised. 2 pp. 7 x 4½ inches, in good condition, with the original envelope also signed W.H.Smith. Greenlands, Henley on Thames, 21 January 1888. William Henry Smith (1825-1891), newsagent and politician. On the formation of Salisbury’s second administration Smith was appointed secretary of state for war in August 1886. In his clashes over War Office estimates with Lord Randolph Churchill at the Treasury, he was clear, adamant, and equable where Churchill was excitable and offensive. In the restructuring of the cabinet, following Churchill’s resignation, Smith became first lord of the Treasury and leader of the House of Commons in January 1887. [DNB]
