Autograph Military Order, signed ‘H.G.Smith, C in C”: “The Fort Adjutant will report to me direct the moment the Mail is dispatched.” 4 x 7 inches, in good condition, light traces of former mounting. 27 December 1847. Sir Harry George Wakelyn Smith (1787-1860), the victor at Aliwal and governor of the Cape of Good Hope during the Kaffir War, was major of brigade at the Battle of Waterloo, and served in numerous theatres of war, including New Orleans (1814). On 3 September 1847 Smith was appointed Governor of the Cape. His classic Autobiography was published posthumously in 1901.
