Cavendish Square, 6 November 1835. Sir Martin Archer Shee (1769–1850), Irish portrait painter and writer, “a tireless politician within the Royal Academy” [DNB]. He was the author of Rhymes on Art; or, the Remonstrance of a Painter. “Your gems are indeed brilliant; and I trust they will be so firmly set in public estimation as amply to repay the skill & taste with which they have been drawn from the mine of our Ancient Literature, and prepared for general admiration.”
