Autograph Letter, signed with initial, to “Dear Smithies”, discussing some philanthropic endeavour. 2¼ pages 7 x 4¼ inches, in good condition, light traces of mounting. 13 December 1862. Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury (1801-85), factory reformer and philanthropist. “And, indeed, Distress is becoming so rife in London, that we must do something here. I trust that, by God’s blessing, there is a dawn, (a very weak dawn, no doubt) of improvement.”
