Description

Autograph Letter Signed ‘G.A. Lichfield’ as Bishop of Lichfield, to Sir Percival, regretting he can not accept the invitation, which would defeat “the great object …which is to distribute my time and efforts equitably over the Diocese and not to be running to and fro at all times without plan or purpose”. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, fine. Palace, Lichfield, 3 July 1869. George Augustus Selwyn (1809-1878) was consecrated Bishop on 17 October 1841, and sailed for New Zealand on 26 December. He was a significant figure in the development of the colonial churches, and his travels to the Pacific Islands led to the formation of the separate diocese of Melanesia. Selwyn College Cambridge was built in his memory.
