SANDWICH, John Montagu, 4th Earl. 19230

Autograph Letter Signed ‘Sandwich’ [to Charles, 3rd Earl of Tankerville], offering to lay before His Majesty the Earl’s views on a possible diplomatic appointment, but explaining that “no new circumstance has happened in it, since I had the honour of laying your request before the King”. 3 pp. 9 x 7 inches, in very good condition, folds. Whitehall, 25 April 1765. John Montagu (1718-92), fourth Earl of Sandwich, first Lord of the Admiralty during the American War of Independence. He assisted Captain Cook in fitting out his fleet in 1778, and the Sandwich Islands [later called Hawaii] were named after him. “I only repeated to [Mr. Caswall] what I said from the first, that I did not see the least prospect of an exchange of Ministers between the two courts in question, & that I was persuaded while things remained in that state, His Majesty would not declare any opinion as to the choice of a person to be employed.”
