Autograph Letter Signed ‘J.D’A.Samuda’, discussing payment for “the trial trip”, setting out on a second page the “Result of Trial Trip with Cornelia – 13 July 1853 – from Blackwall to Gravesend & back”, showing the speeds achieved in various experiments. 2 pp. 9 x 7½ inches, a few creases, in good condition. Orchard Place, Blackwall, 14 July 1853. Joseph D’Aguilar Samuda (1813-1885), Jewish engineer and shipbuilder, politician. Samuda Brothers built iron steamships for both the Royal Navy and the merchant navy, and for the passenger and mail services of England and other countries, besides royal yachts and river boats. In 1860 he helped to establish the Institution of Naval Architects.
