Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch (1836 – 1895), Austrian writer and journalist, who gained renown for his romantic stories of Galician life, and the author of Venus In Furs (1869). The term masochism is derived from his name. The term masochism was invented in 1886 by the Austrian psychiatrist Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing in his seminal work, Psychopathia Sexualis. The Heritage [or Legacy] of Cain contains his most famous novella, Venus in Furs. “On The Heights will begin to appear on April 1 under the auspices of Mr. E.L.Morgenstern of Liepzig who has already, some time ago, acquired the second part of the Heritage of Cain from the publishing house of Frebern and the remaining parts of this work from me. Mr. Morgenstern is also taking steps to publish separate portions of The Heritage of Cain, for which the public has been asking for years.”
