Description

Half page inscribed and signed for an album belonging to her cousin, John: “Tout lasse, tout casse, tout passe. You only asked for a few words, dear John, let these be sufficient to remind you of your affectionate cousin, Matilda Rigby.” Inscribed half page only, 3 x 6 inches, fine. Framlingham Earl, 22 October 1835. A delightful discovery. Matilda Rigby was the subject of a famous early photograph: Matilda Smith (née Rigby) by David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson, calotype, 1843-1848. Matilda was one of quadruplets born to Edward Rigby and his second wife, Anne, on 25 August 1817. Edward Rigby (1747-1821), physician, writer and local politician, is buried at Framlingham.
