Autograph Letter Signed ‘B. London’, to the Revd. Mr. Bull Pentlow in Suffolk, about his future appointment, saying his correspondent’s friends must exert themselves, and “I shall not be idle.” 1 page 8½ x 7½ inches, in good condition, with the integral address leaf, also signed, and bearing the bishop’s seal in red wax. London, 26 February 1803. Beilby Porteus (1731 – 1809), successively Bishop of Chester and of London was an Anglican reformer and leading abolitionist in England. He was the first Anglican in a position of authority to seriously challenge the Church’s position on slavery.
