Autograph Letter Signed ‘Carlo Pellegrini’, to Sir Henry [Thompson], accepting his invitation to the dinner on the 15th. 1 page 4 x 7 inches, mounted on part of an old album leaf. Studio, 8 George Street, Hanover Square, 5 January 1879. Uncommon. Carlo Pellegrini (1839 — 1889) “Ape”, Italian caricaturist. From 1869 to 1889 he was a caricaturist for Vanity Fair. His work for the magazine made his reputation and he became its most influential artist. His correspondent, Sir Henry Thompson, Bart., Professor of Surgery at University College, London, was known for his dinner parties at his house 35 Wimpole Street, called “Octaves”, at which eight courses, accompanied by eight wines, were served at eight o’clock to eight guests in addition to the host and the guest of honour.
