Autograph Letter Signed, to Sir Benjamin Hawes, returning a medal as the the British Museum already possesses an example. 1 page 7 x 4½ inches, foxing along folds only, otherwise in good condition. Docketed by Hawes “Stewart Medal of 1750”. British Museum, 23 January 1861. Sir Anthony Panizzi (1797-1879), Italian bibliographer, chief librarian of the British Museum from 1856. On the integral leaf is a letter from Samuel Birch, Keeper of Antiquities, to Panizzi: “The medal offered by Sir Benjamin Hawes is in the Collections of the Museum. Mr [Edward] Hawkins (1780-1867, numismatist) informs me that it was engraved in England by Pingo and that he has published an account of it in Notes & Queries … where will be found an account of a number struck in this country, and the prices paid.”
