Autograph Letter Signed ‘L.Oliphant’, to Lady Grant Duff, offering the Grant Duffs his house at Haifa for the winter, describing in detail the house, the stables, the servants, the locality, with advice on the journey. About 550 words on 4 pp. 8 x 5 inches, tattered at the edges, some old repairs, numerous marginal tears, but complete. Dalieh [near Mount Carmel, Haifa], 12 September [no year given, c.1883]. In need of conservation, but a remarkable text to survive from Oliphant’s phase of commitment to Palestine colonisation. Laurence Oliphant (1829-88), traveller, writer and mystic. He travelled to China as secretary to Lord Elgin. His works include The Russian Shores of the Black Sea (1853) and the novel Piccadilly (1870). “You can find company among the German colonists.”
