By 1872 she was hugely popular and, after making a successful tour of British cities and giving a series of farewell performances in London, she went to America, where she made many tours during the 1870s. “I felt better last night than I have felt for some time. In the last act however I was in great pain – for an eyelash got into my eye, & I was nearly blinded by my tears in to the bargain.
