Autograph Letter Signed ‘Napier’, to Captain John Ross, thanking him for his letter about communicating with the Astronomical Institution of Edinburgh [later the Royal Observatory], “touching the voyage of discovery on which you are about to proceed”, saying that Napier has forwarded the letter to the Secretary in Edinburgh, “to be laid before the Council as you desire”. 1 page 9 x 7 inches, fine, tipped along left edge to an old album page. London, 3 March 1829. William John Napier, 9th Lord Napier (1786-1834), naval officer, midshipman on HMS Defence at the Battle of Trafalgar, later envoy to China (died at Macao, 1834). In 1818 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Captain Sir John Ross (1777-1856), polar explorer.
