Autograph Letter Signed, as Commander in Chief, addressed “Dear Madam”, saying he has given her brother leave to come to Simla following his “misfortune”, and knowing she is “alone and not acquainted with anyone”, saying that he will make a point of calling on her. 3 pp. 8 x 5 inches, worn at folds, with a few holes and blemishes, but in clean legible condition. Simla, 30 August 1850. General Sir Charles James Napier (1782-1853), conqueror of Sind, Commander in Chief in India 1849-50. “I am ignorant if your name is Swift, or if you are his sister in law? He does not mention, so I take the chance of my messenger finding out where you live by the name of Swift!”
