Autograph Letter Signed ‘Napier’ as Governor of Madras, to Mr. Jones, about the publication of his name in the Gazette, commending “you and your good works to the new Vice Roy”, etc. 4 pp. 9 x 7 inches, fine. Government House, Guindy Park [Madras], 12 January, no year given. Francis Napier, tenth Lord Napier of Merchistoun and first Baron Ettrick (1819–1898), diplomatist and administrator in India. He served as ambassador to the United States from 1857 to 1859 and to the Netherlands from 1859 to 1861, as Ambassador to Russia from 1861 to 1864 and to Prussia from 1864 to 1866. The latter year he was appointed Governor of Madras, a post he held until 1872, when he also served as acting Viceroy of India for a short period.
