Autograph Letter Signed ‘M.R.Mitford’, to Henry Russell, “our sheet anchor” in an effort to rehabilitate “a poor youth”, adding the latest news about her play. 2 pp. 4 x 3 inches, in good condition, with the address leaf. 29 September 1828. Mary Russell Mitford (1787-1855), novelist and dramatist, author of Our Village (1824-32). A combined effort, including help from the Russells, had rescued ‘a poor youth’. ‘You know probably that the poor youth is retained & is in the happiest frame of mind. His conduct has been as amiable & his sufferings have been as great as any that I ever heard of.’ Mary Russell Mitford’s play, Rienzi, was produced at Drury Lane in October 1828. The printed play sold 8000 copies. “My play continues fixed for Saturday the 11th, & I have better & better accounts of my young actress whom Mrs. Young instructs every day.”
