MILL, John Stuart. 19268

Autograph Letter Signed ‘J.S.Mill’, to S.G.Rathbone, thanking him for the invitation “to attend and take part in a Reform Meeting to be held at Liverpool”, explaining why he is unable to accept. 2 pp. 6 x 4 inches, in very good condition. Avignon, 18 November 1866. John Stuart Mill (1806-73), English philosopher and radical reformer. “My absence, however, from England, and the pressure of occupations which require the whole time of the recess, have compelled me to abstain from taking part in any of the Reform demonstrations which have been held in so many of the principal towns, and the same causes prevent me from being able to attend even so important a meeting as that contemplated by the Reformers of Liverpool.”
