Avon Tyrrell, Ringwood, 24 September 1895. “… there was no one I was fonder of than yourself in S.Africa, and no officer gave me more loyal support.” Field Marshal Paul Sanford Methuen, 3rd Baron Methuen, (1845 -1932). Methuen served in the army in the Gold Coast (Ashanti War) and in the Bechuanaland Protectorate. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant General in 1899, and fought in the Battle of Magersfontein in the Second Boer War. There he was defeated by the Boers on December 11, 1899.
