MEREDITH, George. 19272

A good Autograph Letter Signed ‘yours ever George Meredith’, to “My dear Tom” [Tom Taylor], inviting him down on Saturday to celebrate an anniversary “& have some nightingale music after dinner”, explaining the limitations of his home for a house party, “but imagine yourselves travelling and arrived at a country inn”. 4 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in good condition. Box Hill, Dorking, 15 May 1878. The uncommon autograph of George Meredith (1828-1909), novelist and poet. “Unfortunately our old Sylvia has departed for Paris, & the cookery shows it, as the light gone out of the Camp.” His correspondent is Tom Taylor (1817-80), critic, dramatist and editor of Punch, later to be the subject of one of Meredith’s poems, To A Friend Lost.
