Autograph Letter Signed ‘Albert Mensdorff’, addressed “Chère amie” but in English throughout, about dinner with the Duke of Connaught, Mensdorff’s journey from Vienna to London, and then to Balmoral, ending with his hope (one soon to be disappointed) for a few “quiet years” ahead 4 pp. 7 x 4½ inches, fine. Balmoral, 4 October 1913. “Things seem to be moving all over the world and I think we all need badly a few dull & quiet years to rest our nerves and bring people to their senses.” Albert Count Mensdorff-Pouilly-Dietrichstein (1861-1945 ), Austro-Hungarian diplomat who played an important diplomatic role before and during the First World War. He was ambassador in London until the outbreak of war in August 1914.
