Autograph Letter Signed ‘Douglas Maclagan’, to William Gourlie, botanist, thanking him for the “very beautiful specimens of the Greenheart and Mora woods”, discussing the plants, and hoping to continue his researches in Glasgow, although he is doubtful he can accomplish it: “Lecturing is a sad dog when one wishes to be peripatetic”. 2¼ pages 7 x 4½ inches, fine. 129 George Street, Edinburgh, 6 December [1842 in another hand]. Sir Andrew Douglas Maclagan (1812–1900), physician and expert in forensic medicine and public health, and botanist, Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. Maclagan was also one of the earliest figures involved in Scottish photography who exhibited examples of photogenic drawing to the Edinburgh Society of Arts as early as March 1843.
