Autograph Letter Signed ‘J.F.Lewis’, to Birket Foster, the artist and illustrator, apologising for keeping his drawing, promising a date for its return. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, fine. Walton, 16 February 1867 John Frederick Lewis (1805-76), painter of Italian, Spanish and oriental subjects. He travelled in Asia Minor and Egypt in the 1840’s. Abut 1850 he began to produce drawings in the novel ‘oriental’ style, which created a sensation in London. “… I have had so many & such frequent interruptions in my work lately, that I feared at one time I should be obliged to send it back to you without profiting by its loan. I now faithfully promise that it shall be with you after the middle of next week …”
