Original Medieval Charter recording the sale of land in Tonge by Henry Schirlock “to John son of John Schirlok of Tonge two butts of land with one dovecot built upon with all their appurtenances in Tonge lying near to the messuage of the aforesaid John”, with the names of witnesses. 274 words on vellum, in Latin (with complete typed English translation), with an attractive complete armorial seal in red wax appended. Given at Tonge on Monday next after the feast of Saint Martin the Bishop [11 November] in the eleventh year of the reign of King Edward the third after the conquest. [17 November 1337] Translation from Latin: Know all men present and future that I Henry Schirlok of Tonge (‘Tunge’) have given granted and by this my present charter confirmed to John son of John Schirlok of Tonge two butts of land with one dovecot built upon with all their appurtenances in Tonge lying near to the messuage of the aforesaid John To have and to hold the aforesaid two butts of land with the aforesaid dovecot with all their appurtenances to the aforesaid John and his heirs or assigns of the chief lords of that fee for the services in respect thereof owed and of right accustomed freely quietly well and in peace, hereditary right in perpetuity And I the aforesaid Henry Schirlok himself of Tonge and my heirs the aforesaid two butts of land with the aforesaid dovecot with all their appurtenances to the aforesaid John son of John Schirlok of Tonge and his heirs or his assigns will warrant against all men and defend in perpetuity. In testimony of which thing I have affixed my seal to this present charter. These witnesses William de Bredon, John Asyngton, William le Hunt of Tonge, William de Kyrkeby of Tonge, and John Dayware of Andreschurch and others.
